When I put back my 550 TI it boots.I already uninstalled the Nvidia drivers using a cleaner tool and installed AMD ones. You are correct in the procedure you laid down as the proper way to do a new installation. On top of that, now that I knew the card worked I pulled it out to sell it and replaced the original card and everything worked flawlessly. Ask !
I still run my HD 6670 in the slot, opting for a complete overhaul instead of trying to cram a beautiful GPU into a store bought PC. Note that when you edit the kernel command-line in GRUB, the changes are not persistent; it'll only be for the one boot. A BIOS update isnt required to make it compatible with other parts if their intent was never to have anything else put into the case. That has just been my experience.

If it's a single rail and the label gives you that rating you should be fine for power.
